The best AI chat app for iPhone and Android in 2026

Different rules apply on a phone than behind a laptop. You type shorter messages, you have less patience, and you are not going to open three apps side by side to compare answers. That is why the question of which AI chat app is best has a different answer than the question of which model is smartest: on your phone you pick one, put it on your home screen, and that is usually where it stays.

This comparison covers the six apps that matter for Dutch users: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Le Chat and Poe. We look at the things that do not change with every update: which model runs in the app, what the free version gives you, what a subscription costs in euros including VAT, and how good the Dutch it produces is.

What we deliberately do not do is tick off buttons. Interfaces get moved, renamed or rolled back every few months, and a comparison that relies on them becomes useless within a quarter. Models, limits and prices, on the other hand, are verifiable, and they determine whether the app is useful to you in the long run.

What really matters in an AI app on your phone?

Four things determine whether an AI app on your phone stays useful, and none of them is about appearance.

Which model runs in the free version. On your phone, you mainly ask short, everyday questions, and that is exactly where the difference between a free and a paid model has shrunk. Since 6 August 2026, free ChatGPT users can chat without limits on GPT-5.6 Luna, with a Think button for heavier questions. Limits still apply to uploads, images and tools. Claude uses Claude Sonnet 5 in its free tier, the same model paying users have as their daily workhorse.

What it costs. Almost all providers are at $20 per month, which after conversion and 21% VAT comes to €21.02. Google and Microsoft price their Dutch consumer plans directly in euros including VAT, the rest invoice in dollars excluding VAT. On your phone, you only notice that difference on your bank statement.

How good the Dutch is. Every model speaks Dutch, but not equally well. In our own language test, Claude scores a 5, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Le Chat get a 4, and Grok and Copilot stay stuck at a 3. On a small screen, that stands out more than you would think: you read the answer at a glance and anglicisms jump out. Which AI speaks the best Dutch covers what goes wrong per model.

Where your data ends up. On a phone, you are quicker to throw in something personal than behind your desk: a photo of a letter, a message you want to rewrite. Mistral processes in the EU (France and Sweden) and offers a mode without telemetry in Le Chat Pro. With Claude, training is off by default on paid consumer plans; if you turn it on, your data is retained longer.

How do the six AI apps compare?

What stands out is how close the paid apps are to each other. Between ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Google AI Pro, Perplexity Pro and Poe Premium, there is less than a euro of difference. So price is no longer a deciding factor; the model in the app and the way you use it are.

ChatGPT and Gemini: the apps you probably already have

ChatGPT is the app with the broadest package. Plus (€21.02) includes GPT-5.6 Sol with a context window of 1.05 million tokens, plus Sora 2 for video, GPT Image 2 for images, Codex and Deep Research. Since the 6 August 2026 update, you can also use a slider with Sol to set how much effort the model puts into an answer. If you mainly want text, the middle tier ChatGPT Go is interesting: $8 comes to €8.41 per month.

The free version is the real news. Unlimited chat on GPT-5.6 Luna means most people will never hit a wall on their phone. Luna is not OpenAI's smartest model, but for a recipe question, a summary or a translation, you rarely notice.

Gemini is in practice already within reach on an Android phone, and many people already pay for it without knowing: Google AI Plus (€7.99) and Google AI Pro (€21.99) are tied to the same account as your storage. AI Plus gives 200 GB of storage, AI Pro adds 2 TB plus NotebookLM, Deep Research and a context window of one million tokens. If you are buying Google One storage anyway, the AI is practically free.

The honest downside: in our language test, Gemini is correct but flat. The grammar is right, but the tone is businesslike and has little personality. In a message to a client, you notice that.

Claude and Le Chat: the apps for people who write

Claude delivers the best Dutch of all the apps in this comparison. Where ChatGPT occasionally translates an English sentence literally, Claude chooses the Dutch idiom and holds the tone you ask for. Claude Pro costs €21.02 per month, or €17.52 per month if you pay annually. That subscription also includes Claude Code and Claude Cowork, which adds little on a phone but is worth a lot on your laptop.

Two things to know before you pay. The top model Claude Fable 5 is not included in Pro: in the apps, you pay for it with prepaid credits. And the free version, with Claude Sonnet 5, is so good that you should first ask yourself whether you need the subscription at all.

Le Chat from Mistral is the European option. Pro costs $14.99, or €15.76 including VAT, making it the cheapest serious Pro subscription. Processing takes place in France and Sweden, and Pro unlocks a mode without telemetry. Students pay $5.99 (€6.30). The Dutch is surprisingly good for a French model, although it stumbles over colloquial language.

The limitation is the context window: Mistral Medium 3.5 works with 256K tokens, compared to one million with Claude, Gemini and OpenAI. For chat on your phone, that is more than enough; for plowing through long documents, it is not.

Perplexity and Poe: sources and model choice

Perplexity does something the other apps do not do by default: every answer comes with sources. On a phone, that is more valuable than on a laptop, because there you are less inclined to quickly check things yourself. Pro costs €21.02 per month and includes $5 of Sonar API credit. Students pay $4.99 (€5.25) for Education Pro. The article about Perplexity covers in more detail where those citations help and where they do not; for long creative texts, it is not the strongest choice.

Poe is the only app in this lineup where you switch between all providers without taking out a subscription per provider. You pay with compute points: roughly 300 per day for free, Starter ($4.99) gives 10,000 points per day, Premium ($19.99) gives 660,000 points per month. Points do not roll over to the next month and buying extra costs about $30 per million points.

Poe has been cut back considerably in 2026: around March, the free tier went from about 3,000 to about 300 points per day and Premium from 1,000,000 to 660,000 points per month. On top of that, a question to an expensive model like Claude Fable 5 costs dozens of times as many points as the same question to a cheap model, so you never know exactly how far you will get. And everything around it is in English: interface, invoices and support.

What does it cost if you use more than one AI app?

Most people do not get by with one app. ChatGPT for images, Claude for texts, Gemini for documents, Perplexity when it has to be accurate: it is a logical way of working, but it gets expensive.

With three apps, you are spending more than €770 per year. That is more than most households pay for streaming and phone plans combined, and on your phone you rarely use more than one app at a time. Which AI app is right for you?

• You just want one app that does everything reasonably well and prefer not to pay → the free ChatGPT app. Unlimited text chat on GPT-5.6 Luna covers the vast majority of what people ask on their phones.
• You write a lot of Dutch → Claude. Start for free with Sonnet 5 and only switch to Pro (€21.02) when you run into the limits.
• You already have Google One storage → Gemini via Google AI Plus (€7.99). You then effectively pay almost nothing extra for the AI.
• You need to be able to check what is correct → Perplexity. Sources with every answer are worth more on a phone than a slightly smarter model.
• Privacy is your main criterion → Le Chat Pro (€15.76). EU processing, and the cheapest of the paid apps.
