Canceling your AI subscription? These are your alternatives

Canceling an AI subscription takes a few clicks in your account settings with every major provider. No notice period, no phone call, no registered letter. What happens next is the same everywhere: you keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for, and then you drop back to the free tier of the same provider.

The harder question is what you use afterwards. Most people don't cancel because AI isn't useful, but because €21.02 a month for something they use twice a week doesn't add up, or because they now have three subscriptions running side by side. This article first covers canceling with each provider, and then the honest question: is free enough, or should you simply switch to something cheaper?

What exactly do you lose when you cancel?

Canceling doesn't mean your account or your history disappears. You drop to the free tier, and in 2026 that tier is considerably better than a year ago. What you do lose are the features the provider has put behind its paywall.

• ChatGPT Plus → you lose the high limits on the top model GPT-5.6 Sol (160 messages per three hours) and the extras: Sora 2 for video, GPT Image 2, Codex, Agent Mode and Deep Research. You keep unlimited text chat on GPT-5.6 Luna and the Think button.
• Claude Pro → you lose Claude Code and Claude Cowork and the more generous usage windows. You keep Claude Sonnet 5, which is also in the free tier and writes the most natural Dutch of all the models.
• Google AI Pro → you lose Gemini 3.1 Pro with a context window of one million tokens, Deep Research, NotebookLM and 2 TB of storage. Note that this storage also covers your photos and email, so check how much you use first.
• Perplexity Pro → you lose free choice of models and the Sonar API credit of $5 per month. You keep source citations in answers.
• Poe Premium → you go from 660,000 compute points per month to about 300 points per day. That is the sharpest difference of them all.

How to cancel with each provider

The pattern is the same everywhere: log in to the web version, go to your account settings, find the section on your subscription or billing and choose cancel there. Confirm, and you'll see the date until which you keep access.

ChatGPT

You cancel in the settings of your OpenAI account, under your subscription. This applies to Go ($8), Plus ($20) and Pro ($100). If you took out your subscription through the App Store or Google Play, you have to cancel it there and not in the app itself; that is the most common reason people think canceling doesn't work.

Claude

Anthropic works the same way: settings, subscription, cancel. If you paid for Claude Pro annually ($200, or €17.52 per month), you keep access until the end of that year. Before you cancel, think about Claude Code: if you use it, canceling doesn't just replace a chat window but also your programming environment.

Google AI Plus and AI Pro

Google AI subscriptions run through your Google account, together with your storage. You cancel under the subscriptions in your Google account. Important: your storage goes down with it, from 2 TB (AI Pro) or 200 GB (AI Plus) back to the free tier. If you're above that with Photos and Drive, canceling creates a problem that has nothing to do with AI.

Perplexity

Here too: account settings, subscription, cancel. If you're a student, canceling may not be necessary — Perplexity Education Pro costs $4.99 (€5.25) instead of $20, a quarter of the price for the same plan.

Poe, Le Chat and SuperGrok

You cancel Poe in your account settings; check whether you pay through an app store. Le Chat Pro ($14.99) and SuperGrok ($30) work on the same principle. With Le Chat it's worth considering staying: at €15.76 per month it is the cheapest Pro subscription of the major providers, and Mistral processes your data in the EU (France and Sweden).

Is the free tier enough for what you do?

For more people than a year ago: yes. This is what the free tiers actually offer in August 2026.

The honest advice: if you mainly write texts, ask questions and have things summarized, you'll barely notice the difference from a paid subscription. If you run into limits with long documents, use images or video, or write code, free is not a serious option. Go cheaper instead of stopping altogether

Often canceling isn't the right move, downgrading is. The mid-range has dropped considerably in 2026.

That the cheaper models are good enough these days isn't marketing talk. GPT-5.6 Terra is roughly as strong as last year's flagship, and in July 2026 OpenAI cut the price of Terra by 20% and of Luna by 80%. With the top subscriptions you mainly pay for the newest generation, not for usefulness.

Which switch fits your reason for canceling?

• Too expensive for how little I use it → go back to free and set a reminder for three months from now. If you then consistently hit limits, take an entry-level plan instead of your old one.
• I have several and it's getting out of hand → first check which ones you actually use. Three subscriptions cost €768.36 per year; the math is in why multiple AI subscriptions are a waste of money.
• The Dutch isn't good enough → that's a choice of model, not a matter of price. In our tests Claude is the only one to score a 5 on Dutch; ChatGPT and Gemini score a 4.
• I don't want my data in the US → Mistral's Le Chat Pro processes in the EU, and the Pro subscription gives you a no-telemetry mode. Avoid DeepSeek for personal or client data: it runs in China without an adequacy decision.
