How much does an AI subscription cost? All prices at a glance

The price an AI provider communicates is almost never the price on your bank statement. OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity all quote $20 per month for their standard subscription. As a Dutch consumer you pay €21.02 for it, because 21% VAT is added on top and the dollar exchange rate does the rest. Google and Microsoft do charge in euros including VAT straight away, which makes their amounts seem lower than they are.

This article lists every subscription from every major provider as you pay for it: in euros, including VAT, per month and per year. All amounts are as of 10 August 2026, converted at $1 = €0.8687.

Which price tiers do AI subscriptions fall into?

The whole market fits into four tiers, and that makes choosing a lot clearer than the long price lists suggest.

Free (€0). Every provider has a free tier, and in 2026 they've become serious. Since 6 August 2026, free ChatGPT gives you unlimited text chat on GPT-5.6 Luna plus a Think button; limits still apply to uploads, images and tools. Claude's free tier runs on Sonnet 5, one of the strongest models on the market. DeepSeek doesn't even have a paid consumer subscription at all.

Entry level (€5 to €11). Poe Starter (€5.25), Google AI Plus (€7.99) and ChatGPT Go (€8.41). This tier didn't exist a year ago and is often enough for light users.

Standard (€15 to €32). Virtually everything is here: Le Chat Pro (€15.76), ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro (€21.02), Poe Premium (€21.01), Perplexity Pro (€21.02), Google AI Pro (€21.99), Microsoft 365 Premium (about €21) and SuperGrok (€31.53).

Heavy (€105 to €315). ChatGPT Pro, Claude Max and Perplexity Max go up to €210.23 per month, SuperGrok Heavy even up to €315.34.

Why $20 becomes €21.02 on your bank statement

Five of the eight major providers bill in dollars excluding VAT: OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, xAI and Mistral, and Poe does the same. Two things then happen in a row.

First, the dollar amount is converted. At $1 = €0.8687, $20 equals €17.37. Then 21% Dutch VAT is added on top, and you're at €21.02. That's 5% more than the €20 you had in mind, and the difference grows the more expensive your subscription: at $200 it's already a €10 difference per month.

The second effect is that your monthly cost moves with the exchange rate. A subscription in dollars is never a fixed amount. With Google and Microsoft you don't have that problem: Google AI Pro costs €21.99 and stays €21.99, whatever the dollar does.

All chat subscriptions in euros per month

Below are all consumer subscriptions from the major providers. The "List price" column is what the provider communicates; the last column is what you pay as a Dutch consumer.

Two rows deserve an explanation, because the price there isn't comparable to the rest. Poe doesn't charge per month but per compute point, and a question to a heavy model costs dozens of times as many points as the same question to a cheap model. Points also don't roll over to the next month, and buying extra in advance costs about $30 per million points. So with Poe you know what you pay, but not how much you can do with it. Google AI Ultra is the second exception: that plan is offered at two levels, €100 and €219, which puts it in a different category from the rest of this list.

What also stands out is how small the spread is in the mid-range. Between ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Poe Premium, Perplexity Pro and Google AI Pro there's less than a euro of difference. The outliers are at the edges: at €15.76 Mistral's Le Chat is consistently cheaper, and at €31.53 SuperGrok is consistently more expensive than the pack.

What do business plans and developer tools cost?

If you work for an organization or you program, different lists apply. Business subscriptions are charged per user, which makes them more expensive than they seem.

Microsoft has dropped the standalone Copilot Pro subscription; Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99 is its consumer successor. For business customers Microsoft offers an EU Data Boundary, which for organizations with sensitive data often weighs more heavily than price.

How much does an AI subscription cost per year?

Monthly amounts of around €21 feel small. Per year the picture is different, and that's the amount you should base your decision on.

Annual billing at Claude and Perplexity is the only real discount in this market: $200 instead of 12 × $20 saves about €42 per year. With most other providers, paying in advance gets you nothing.

Can you pay less than €21 per month?

Yes, and for many people that's the better choice. Three routes are worth considering.

Take an entry-level subscription. For €7.99, Google AI Plus gives you access to Gemini 3.1 Pro with 200 GB of storage. ChatGPT Go costs $8 and raises your limits without you paying the full €21.

Check whether you qualify for a discount. Perplexity Education Pro costs $4.99 (€5.25) and Le Chat Student $5.99 (€6.30). That's a saving of more than 70% compared to the standard price; we worked that out in AI for students.

What does it cost if you take several?

This is where the real expense comes from. Hardly anyone uses just one model: ChatGPT for images, Claude for text and code, Gemini for documents, Perplexity when it has to be accurate. Each of those sits behind its own paywall.
