ChatGPT alternative: 10 better and cheaper options in 2026

ChatGPT is no longer the default best choice. That is the shortest summary of August 2026: eight providers now deliver models at the same level, and on a few concrete points (writing Dutch, citing sources, price, where your data is processed) they are measurably better. So the question is no longer whether a good alternative exists, but which alternative fits the work you do.

People usually look for an alternative for one of two reasons. Either the €21.02 per month hurts, especially when two other AI subscriptions are already on the bank statement. Or they run into something concrete: answers without sources, Dutch that smells of English, or the question of whether customer data is even allowed to cross the Atlantic.

Below are ten alternatives, ranked from "can fully replace ChatGPT" to "better in one specific case". With the price as it appears on your statement: converted to euros and including 21% VAT.

Why "better than ChatGPT" depends on the task

The honest answer to "which one is better" is that every provider wins at something. The underlying models are close together in raw quality; the difference is in the surrounding conditions. How many messages can you send, how good is the Dutch, is there a coding environment included, and where is the server.

Know this too before you cancel anything. Since 6 August 2026, free ChatGPT users can text chat with GPT-5.6 Luna without limits, with a Think button for harder questions; the limits now only apply to uploads, images and tools. And Claude gives free users Claude Sonnet 5, a top model. For some readers, the answer to "which alternative" is therefore a free version from someone else. The four alternatives that can really replace ChatGPT

Claude from Anthropic

Claude Pro costs $20, so €21.02 including VAT, or €17.52 per month if you pay annually. It is the only subscription in this price range with a full coding environment included: Claude Code and Claude Cowork are both part of it. The context window is 1 million tokens and training is off by default on paid consumer plans.

The real reason we put Claude at the top for Dutch users is language. In our own test Claude scores a 5 on Dutch, against a 4 for ChatGPT: correct idioms, no anglicisms, and a tone you can adjust. More on that in ChatGPT alternative for Dutch.

The downside: the very best model, Claude Fable 5, is not in Pro. In the apps it costs prepaid credit. If you want the top model every day, you end up at Max 5x (€105.11), and that is a different price level.

Gemini from Google

Google is the price breaker. Google AI Plus costs €7.99 per month and Google AI Pro €21.99, both in euros including VAT, so no exchange-rate surprises. AI Pro includes a 1 million token context window, Deep Research, NotebookLM and 2 TB of storage; AI Plus has 200 GB.

For document work that is a strong offer. Large PDFs, reports, annual reports: Gemini 3.1 Pro chews through them without complaint. The Dutch is correct but businesslike and flat; if you want persuasive copy, you notice.

Perplexity

Perplexity Pro costs $20, so €21.02, with $5 per month in Sonar API credit on top. It stands out on one thing, and it does that better than anyone: every answer comes with its sources. For anyone who has to be able to justify facts (journalism, research, policy), that is the difference between usable and unusable. Students should look at Education Pro for $4.99 (€5.25). Where it is weaker: long creative texts. Perplexity is an answer engine, not a writer.

Le Chat from Mistral

Le Chat Pro costs $14.99 (€15.76), making it the cheapest Pro subscription in the whole field. Mistral is French and processes data in the EU, in France and Sweden. The Pro plan unlocks a mode without telemetry. Students pay $5.99 (€6.30).

The Dutch is surprisingly good for a French model, a 4 in our test, with a neutral tone that only stumbles over colloquial language. Mistral Medium 3.5 has a 256K context window, smaller than the million of the competition. You won't notice that in ordinary chats, but you will with a book full of attachments.

Six alternatives for specific situations

Microsoft Copilot. The free web chat costs nothing. The standalone Copilot Pro subscription no longer exists: Microsoft 365 Premium ($19.99, about €21) is the consumer replacement, and that puts Copilot in Word and Excel plus the Office apps. For business, the EU Data Boundary is the argument. Dutch is the weak point: a 3, because Copilot slides back into English in long answers.

Grok from xAI. SuperGrok costs $30, or €31.53, making it the most expensive standard subscription. You get two things for it: Grok 4.5 is strong at code and it has live access to data from X. The context window is 500K. The humor the model has in English falls flat in Dutch.

DeepSeek. Free, and there is no paid consumer plan. DeepSeek V4 handles 1 million tokens of context and the weights are public. But it runs in China, which has no adequacy decision. So for personal data or customer data it is not an option, however good the model is.

Poe from Quora. The American bundle solution: dozens of models behind one subscription, billed in compute points. Premium costs $19.99 (€21.01) for 660,000 points per month, Starter $4.99 (€5.25) for 10,000 points per day. The honest downside: Poe cut back considerably in 2026. The free tier went from about 3,000 to about 300 points per day and Premium from 1,000,000 to 660,000 points per month. Points don't roll over, and buying extra costs about $30 per million. Everything around it is in English: interface, invoices, support.

Open models on your own machine. Muse Glimmer from Meta (August 2026) is a 30-billion-parameter model under Apache 2.0 that runs on a single consumer GPU, with 256K context. Mistral Small 4 and Mistral Large 3 are also free to use. Your data then literally stays at home. You do give up quality, and you are your own system administrator.

One subscription for all models. The reason we exist: instead of one subscription per provider, one Dutch subscription with all the major models in it. Plus costs €12.95 per month (€129 per year), there is a free tier without a credit card, and invoices are in euros including VAT.

What the alternatives cost

What ChatGPT still does better

It would be unfair to suggest that every alternative is an improvement. ChatGPT Plus has three things the rest don't.

First, images and video: Sora 2 and GPT Image 2 are not in any other subscription in this price range. If you want to generate video, the conversation is over quickly. Second, the breadth of the package: Codex, Agent Mode and Deep Research are all in the same subscription, where elsewhere you have to choose. Third, the free version, which since August 2026 gives unlimited text chat on GPT-5.6 Luna; for light users that is hard to beat. And the Dutch, at a 4, is perfectly fine.

Which alternative suits you

• You write a lot of Dutch → Claude Pro. It saves you editing.
• You want to pay as little as possible but still get something good → Google AI Plus for €7.99, or simply the free Claude with Sonnet 5.
• You need to be able to point to your sources → Perplexity Pro.

• You code → Claude Pro for Claude Code, or GitHub Copilot Pro for $10 (€10.51) if you want to stay in your editor.
• You switch models per task → a bundle subscription, because two separate subscriptions already cost more.

How to switch without gaps in your work

Don't cancel anything until you have used the alternative for a week with your own work, not with test questions. Most providers work the same way: you cancel in your account settings, you keep access until the end of the paid period and then drop back to free.
